FDA Tired of Misleading Food Labels

Whether it’s Chocolate Cheerios advertising that it “may reduce the risk of heart disease”, Juicy Juice claiming it aids “brain development” or Nestle’s Drumsticks showcasing it has “0g Trans Fat” but leaving out that eating them may actually help make you fat – the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is fed up with false and misleading claims on food labels.

The FDA has sent out a group of letters warning companies about their misleading advertising practices. The commissioner of food and drugs, Margaret Hamburg, M.D., stated on the FDA’s website, “Today, ready access to reliable information about the calorie and nutrient content of food is even more important, given the prevalence of obesity and diet-related diseases in the United States.”

The FDA sent out 17 letters in total addressing the questionable labeling on 22 food products. You can view a list of all of these products on the FDA’s website.

Parents Beware of Childrens Toxic Face Paint This Halloween

It has just been brought to our attention that some children's face paints contain lead, which is a neurotoxin that can harm the brain at low doses. So, the face is the last place you would want to be applying this stuff ... and certainly not on our children! This info comes from a report by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a national coalition of nonprofit health and environmental groups.

In some of the paints tested, the lab identified the heavy metals nickel, cobalt and chromium, which are skin allergens, even in products labeled "non-toxic" and "hypoallergenic." Since these metals are not listed on product labels, parents shopping for Halloween makeup have no way of knowing which products are safe. The only way to know if a cosmetic product contains lead or other heavy metals is to test the product at a laboratory, which the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics did for their report.

Child Obesity Link to Chemicals in Plastics

It has long been assumed that many children become overweight because they are not exercising enough or aren't eating properly. However, a new long-term health study, just presented by researchers from the Mount Sinai Medical Center, reveals a very probable link with childhood obesity and chemicals used in plastics. This data, also published in the journal Epidemiology, presents some of the first evidence linking obesity and endocrine disruptors in humans.

The chemicals causing endocrine disruption, affecting glands and hormones that regulate bodily functions, are called phthalates and they are used to make plastics pliable and in personal care products. You have read much about the phthalates used im making baby bottles and other plasticware and toys and there is now new regulation to help rid many products of this chemical compound.

Tons of Released Drugs Taint US Water

According to an Associated Press investigation, US manufacturers and drugmakers have legally released more than 271 million pounds of pharmaceuticals into the waterways that often provide our drinking water. This alarming revelation has consistently been overlooked by our federal government. Apparently there are hundreds of active pharmaceutical ingredients, used in manufacturing and drugmaking, that are finding their way into our drinking supplies.

Some of the scary chemicals and pharmaceuticals that are showing up, in trace amounts, are lithium, nitroglycerin, copper, antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones. Two common industrial chemicals, phenol and hydrogen peroxide, account for 92 percent of the 271 million pounds coming from both drugmakers and manufacturers. these can all be toxic and endanger the environment.

MRSA Found in Our Food Supply in Pork

As if we need to hear another worrisome story about our food and our health, but we should all read this story just featured in the NY Times.

Current studies, such as those published by Applied and Environmental Microbiology, are now showing that MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant staph infection, is being found in pork and pork products. This is due to the fact that, in our country, it is permissible to use antibiotics in animal feed for nontherapeutic purposes. This practice is not acceptable in places like Europe and South Korea, so why should we stand for this?

MRSA kills more than 18,000 Americans annually. And it has been demonstrated that over 25% of American hogs carry MRSA. This is because the majority of antibiotics, in this country, go to animals not the human population.

We need to let our voices be heard so that our government can change some of these current practices. If we don't take an interest in our own health, who will?

Kids Sleeping with Chemicals? - Buy Organic Cotton Pajamas

If someone told you that your child was sleeping in a bed of chemicals you would be rightfully horrified. But Kids Pajamas, for the most part, are treated with certain chemicals to make them "fire-retardant". We truly understand the idea behind making all kids pajamas with this in mind, however, there are some alternatives.

The majority of kids pajamas on the market today are made from synthetic materials. The danger with synthetics, nylon and polyester in particular, is that they melt when heated. Thus, the reasoning behind making the pajama fabric or treating pajamas with fire retardant.

Health Alert - Mercury in Corn Syrup & Never Reported by FDA

We have just been informed that studies have now confirmed that Mercury is present in as much as 50% of commercial HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). This is so alarming ... and we have all been searching for what could possibly be causing such increases in childhood Autism and Developmental Delays.

According to results from a study released by the Institute for Agricultural and Trace Policy (IATP), there is evidence of mercury in many products containing high fructose corn syrup, meaning almost every processed food we consume. Just consider all the things that children eat and, if you check the ingredients, most of these products have some wording for high fructose corn syrup in the ingredients list. And foods such as syrup, ketchup and chocolate syrup ... things eaten many days by your family ... all contain a large amount of corn syrup.

How to Keep Your Home Safe Over the Holidays- Avoid Most Common Causes of Holiday Fires and Emergencies

For many of us, the Winter Weather has begun. During the Winter months, more fires occur because more people are using their fireplaces and wood stoves.
Make sure you know how to keep your home and family safe during the Winter months, and especially during the Holiday season, when even more potential hazards are looming.
Here are a few reminders to keep your Holidays safe:

1. If you use your Fireplace or Wood Burning Stove - make sure the flue is open and put out the fire before going to bed.

2. Do not smoke in bed or when you may fall asleep.

Make sure you put out all cigarettes before leaving a room or going to sleep.

3. Lock up any matches or lighters in your home

Make sure no matches, lighters or other flammables are within reach of where your child might play with them. Ideally, you should have them in a locked cabinet.

Be Smart & Secure When Shopping Online

With most Americans shopping on line these days, it is good to know a few basic safety procedures to keep your information secure and private. We all think that identity theft happens to someone else but it could, actually, happen to anyone.

Here are a few tips to keeping your information safe.

1. USE A HOME COMPUTER
If you will be entering credit card information, do not use an internet cafe or a hotel computer. Only shop at home or on a computer you know to be safe from viruses. You don’t even want to know what could happen to all your private information.

2. HOW SAFE IS THE SECURE CHECKOUT
Always check the web address when you get to a checkout page if you are shopping online. Most website urls start with HTTP, but for a secure website, it will start with HTTPS. The S indicates it is a secure site.

3. KEEP ONE CARD FOR ONLINE PURCHASES ONLY
