The Lipstick Indicator – Barometer of the Economy
Who knew? Apparently, economic professors know this one. When the economy goes south, lipstick sales go up! This was documented during the Great Depression, when cosmetic sales increased by 25 percent.
The reasoning is that maybe you can’t, or won’t, spend money on expensive clothing or home decor, but women will pick up a new tube of lipstick. And sure enough, after September 11, lipstick sales actually doubled.
Tracked by the New York Times, it is noted that within the last few months that lipstick sales have gone up 40 percent. So, ladies, I guess we should help this indicator out and go buy another tube of our very favorite lipstick!
